Meyer may stay in SA

Former Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer’s future with English Premiership team Leicester Tigers will be known this week — but it will be no surprise if he doesn’t return to the Tigers, says a report in the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport.

The paper reports that the British club’s concession for Meyer to return home on compassionate grounds — both his wife’s parents are suffering from cancer and are very ill — expires on Sunday.

Meyer started coaching Leicester this season. His departure for South Africa upset their planning.

The newspaper reports that Meyer would not discuss his decision except to say that he would pursue the matter with Leicester chief executive Peter Wheeler this week.

His children have apparently been registered with a primary school in Pretoria, says Rapport.

Former Springbok Derick Hougaard, who followed Meyer to Leicester, was quoted in England as saying he didn’t expect Meyer to return.

Meyer has been linked to the South East Cape franchise. Eastern Province chairman Cheeky Watson says he would be interested in someone like him guiding the franchise’s fortunes.
