Australia struggle against NZ

New Zealand bowler Tim Southee took four wickets to help bowl Australia out for 214 runs in the first Test match in Brisbane today.

Southee took the first three wickets of Matthew Hayden (8), Simon Katich (10) and Ricky Ponting (4) to put New Zealand on the front foot in conditions that favoured the bowlers.

Michael Clark saved the Australian innings with a well played 98 before he was bowled by Jesse Ryder.

Clark and Mike Hussey (35) put on a valuable partnership before Hussey was given out lbw off Chris Martin's bowling.

Andrew Symonds, returning to Australian team after being sidelined for disciplinary reasons, scored a rapid 26 runs before edging a Iain O'Brien to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.

New Zealand are 7-0 after the resumption of play with Jamie How on 2 and Aaron Redmond on 3.
