Mike Gibson Tribute

Perhaps George had more luck with the ladies?
Cameron Michael Henderson MBE, otherwise known as Mike Gibson, was the original George
Best of rugby. Not just for his Northern Irish links, the versatile back, blessed
with a breathtaking mixture of cute hands. pacy legs and astute game-management, was
one of the initial fifteen inductees into the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame.
Back when caps were dished out as frequently as sightings of The Loch Ness Monster,
Gibson’s 69-match career spanned a remarkable 15 years. He toured with the British
Lions five times, making yet more history when, after coming on for the injured Barry
John against South Africa in 1968 in Pretoria, he became the first replacement in
international rugby.
Also this week, in 1980, Wales lose 3-23 in a one-off Test against New Zealand at
Cardiff to celebrate their Centenary season, Australia beat England 12-6 in the 1991
Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham and in 1987, Hugo Porta scores 23 points to steer
Argentina to a series-winning 27-19 victory over Australia in Buenos Aires.
On a lighter note, it’s a Sretan Rodendan, as they say in Croatia, to French
rugby legend, Fabien Pelous (35); not so famous Frenchie, Xavier Garbajosa (32); Kiwi-great,
Byron Kelleher (32); American rapper and entrepreneur, Jay Z (39); and slurry British
musician, Ozzy Osbourne (60).
