Only one man named to review De Villiers

Craig Ray PETER de Villiers faces a review as Springbok coach, but so far the committee that will do the job has only one member.

The president of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, Jannie Ferreira, will chair the committee, but no date has been set for the review and no other members appointed.

When Jake White was Bok coach he was subjected to three reviews a season, for his four-year tenure, and rarely faced an unchanged committee .

Whoever is appointed to the committee, De Villiers is safe in his job, especially after the 53-8 win over the Wallabies at the weekend.

The purpose of the debriefing is to examine the Springboks’ performances in games, management relations, player issues, marketing, logistical details and transformation targets.

The review offers the coach a chance to speak his mind and to make suggestions and requests .

While De Villiers will face some criticism, and a possible grilling on his tactical approach (assuming the committee includes a technical analyst), it’s also a chance to take the game forward.

If De Villiers feels he needs more technical experts, such as visual expert Sherylle Calder, or a kicking coach, he can raise this.

It was at such a review that it was agreed White could rest key players for the away leg of the 2007 Tri- Nations. The move was unpopular with New Zealand, Australia and the TV rights holder, Newscorp, but it proved a masterstroke in preparing South Africa for the World Cup.
